Training patients in spirometry testing is crucial. Most failures are caused by inaccurate measurements such as strength, speed, duration and lack of breath. To achieve behaviour change, patients, particularly children, require comprehensive practice and visual engagement to improve their overall performance.

Airpen is a smart spirometer that allows patients with respiratory health conditions to complete a lung function test correctly and effectively. With subtle gamification, patients are able to use the paired app to track trends, patterns and goals. This is complemented with a chat feature which allows flexibility in sending daily updates and reports to their dedicated health professional.

The brand identity is based on an Antarctic design language, conveying airy visuals and a characterised penguin to illustrate a playful look and feel. A combination of soft forms, warm colours and contemporary typography is emphasised across multiple physical and digital touch points.

The small spirometer compacts wireless technology and a LED matrix display into a thin product architecture. Together with a soft form factor, the device aids pocketability so that patients can carry the spirometer around at any given time.

A ring is situated at the back of the spirometer where light shines through the translucent mouthpiece to receive soft and gentle exhalation feedback. This simple solution ensures correct blowing techniques and better synchronisation, especially if a phone is not in hand. When a test is complete, the light turns red or green, depending on whether it was a good or bad result.

Live progress of the test is displayed on the app during a session. It is represented in the form of an iconic avatar to encourage behaviour change. Playful animations are interactive throughout the session to engage patients and ensure that they achieve their set goal. This method of gamification accounts for all age groups, especially children who struggle to concentrate.

Parents and caregivers can use a fee-for-service subscription model to send daily updates and reports of a test to their dedicated healthcare professional. Vice versa, the healthcare professional can instruct on the child’s technique, lung condition and assign goals for the patients’ future consultations.

By implementing a cohesive visual language, Airpen challenges the conventional medical aesthetic by incorporating a playful look and feel that appeals to all age groups.
